Focus Industry: Clean Energy Technology
With a focus on renewable energy solutions and alternative energy investments, the Sacramento Region has emerged as a national hub for clean and green technology research and development. The area hosts over 200 clean technology firms and organizations, many with headquarters in the region. Some of the characteristics that make the region fertile ground for business relocation and expansion in this industry include:
1 – Several excellent universities, community colleges, and private post secondary institutions with renewable energies, energy efficiency, and environmental curricula and areas of research.
2 – As the capital of California, the Sacramento Region is where cutting-edge decisions are made, dramatically affecting the landscape of the clean energy technology industry. Decisions made in California regarding renewable energy solutions and the environment are often used for models for the rest of the U.S. Coupled with various manufacturing incentives and California’s green technology focus, the Sacramento Region is a natural choice for business relocation and expansion. California currently makes up over 70 percent of the U.S. market for solar energy.
3 – The region is a large and expanding market for several renewable energies and green technology industries, including wind and solar energy, sustainability and energy efficiency, and biomass. For example, as shown in the figure below, along with the San Francisco Bay Area, the Sacramento Region is a leader in solar installations per capita, in both the number of installations and capacity (MW). In addition, the Sacramento Region, and all of the regions listed, individually have more solar installations than any state in the U.S.
4 – The Sacramento Region has three of the top ten most progressive utility companies in the U.S. as community providers of gas and electricity: Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), and Roseville Electric. All three have special programs focused on renewable energy solutions and manufacturing incentives to assist companies. They may also offer economic development rates to companies meeting certain job creation criteria.
